What a barrel sauna install involves
A barrel sauna arrives as a kit on a pallet, curbside. Getting from that pallet to your first session is usually three jobs:
1. Electrical: a dedicated 240V circuit
Most barrels use a 6 kW Harvia KIP heater on a 30 A, 240V hardwired circuit; 8 kW heaters need 40 A and Backyard Discovery's 9 kW heater 50 A. The electrician runs the circuit from your panel (often through buried conduit), installs the heater connection, and usually pulls the permit. Distance and panel capacity drive the price. Owners on r/Sauna report quotes from roughly $800 to $2,700 for similar-sounding jobs, which is exactly why comparing three bids pays. Wiring guide →
2. Foundation: a firm, level, well-drained base
Almost Heaven's prep guidance lists a 3–4 in concrete pad, 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone, a deck that carries the weight, or level pavers or blocks. Barrels weigh roughly 700–1,300 lb before people, and they sit on two cradles, so level matters: an out-of-level base stresses the staves and bands. Foundation guide →
3. Assembly
Two handy people can generally put up a Pinnacle in six hours or less with a cordless drill, according to its dealer Select Saunas. Getting a 700–900 lb crate from the curb to the backyard is often the harder part. Pro assembly is available: Almost Heaven advertises nationwide installation starting at $1,400.
How to compare the quotes you get
- Same scope on every bid: breaker size, wire gauge and type, conduit and trench depth, disconnect (if required), permit and inspection, and who patches the lawn.
- Heater manual in hand: send each electrician the heater's install manual. Harvia's KIP manual specifies the wire size and says not to put the heater on a GFCI breaker, a detail some electricians miss.
- Licensed and insured: ask for license numbers and a certificate of insurance before work starts.
- Pad specs in writing: dimensions, depth of base, compaction, and finished level.
- Timing: build the pad before delivery. The electrician can trench and run conduit any time, but the final heater hookup happens after the barrel is assembled, because the heater mounts inside it.
Frequently asked questions
Who installs a barrel sauna?
Usually up to three trades: a licensed electrician for the dedicated 240V circuit, a landscaper or concrete contractor for the gravel or concrete pad, and a handyman, carpenter or the brand's install partner for assembly. Some general contractors handle all three.
How much does barrel sauna installation cost?
Wiring commonly runs $500–$3,800 depending mostly on distance from the panel; a pad $300–$2,500 installed (or under $150 in gravel if you DIY); permits often $50–$350; and pro assembly from about $1,400 (Almost Heaven's advertised starting price). See the cost calculator.
Is this service free?
Yes, for homeowners. Local pros may pay us when they receive a request. You're never obligated to hire anyone.
How many pros will contact me?
Up to three per request, and only ones that serve your ZIP code. If we can't find a match in your area, we'll tell you.
What should I have ready?
Your sauna model (or a shortlist), a photo of your open electrical panel showing the main breaker and free slots, a photo of the spot with the house in frame, and the rough distance between them.
