Buy the right barrel sauna, and know the full installed price before you order

The sticker price is only the kit. Every electric barrel also needs a 240V circuit, a level base and, often, a permit. We pull real prices, spec sheets and owner reports into one place, then help you get local quotes for the parts you can't DIY.

How we make money: some links on this page are affiliate links (marked "partner link"), so we may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Local pros may pay us for quote requests. Neither changes what we write. Full disclosure.

Why the "real" price of a barrel sauna surprises people

Barrel saunas ship as a kit on a pallet, delivered curbside by a freight truck. The big brands make assembly realistic for two handy people: Select Saunas, an Almost Heaven dealer, says two people can generally assemble a Pinnacle in six hours or less with a cordless drill. The parts that catch buyers out are the ones that aren't in the box:

  • Power. The common 6 kW heater is a 240V, 30-amp hardwired load. Owners on r/Sauna report electrician quotes from about $800 to $2,700 for what sounds like the same job, mostly driven by the distance from the panel and whether the panel has room.
  • A base. A Pinnacle ships at 715 lb and Redwood's 6-person barrel lists 900 lb, before you add people. It needs gravel, concrete, pavers or a strong deck, and it needs to be level.
  • Paperwork. Small detached structures are often exempt from building permits, but the electrical work usually isn't.

That's the gap this site fills. Start with the cost calculator, read the buyer's guide if you haven't picked a model, and use the quote form when you're ready to price the install.

How we research (and what we don't claim)

We don't sell saunas and we haven't hand-tested the models we cover. Every price on this site was checked on a named seller's page on a stated date, every spec comes from a manufacturer or dealer listing, and owner experiences are summarized from public threads with the source named. When sources disagree (warranties are the usual offender) we say so. More on our method.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a barrel sauna cost in total?

The kit is the biggest line: a 4-person Almost Heaven Pinnacle was $5,303–$6,060 at the sellers we checked in October 2026, and Redwood Outdoors' 6-person barrel was $5,549. Add a dedicated 240V circuit (Fixr puts a basic 220V circuit at $500–$800; long trenched runs cost more), a level base (gravel material can be under $150 for an 8×8 ft pad; poured concrete or pavers cost more), and any permit. Together those usually add roughly $600 to $4,500 on top of the kit. Run the calculator.

Do barrel saunas need 240V?

Electric barrel saunas do. The common 6 kW Harvia KIP heater is specified for 240V on a 30-amp circuit and 8 kW models on 40 amps; some 9 kW heaters need 50 amps. A separate 120V circuit usually runs the light. A licensed electrician should size and install it. Wiring guide.

What do I put a barrel sauna on?

Almost Heaven's prep guidance lists a 3–4 in concrete pad, 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone, a deck built for the weight, or level blocks or pavers. It must be firm, level and drain well. Foundation guide.

Who installs barrel saunas?

Usually three trades: an electrician for the circuit, a landscaper or concrete contractor for the pad, and a handyman or the brand's install partner for assembly. Almost Heaven advertises nationwide installation starting at $1,400. Our quote form asks local pros to bid on the parts you need.
