How Much Does a Barrel Sauna Really Cost?
Short answer: the kit is $3,000–$8,500 for the barrels we priced in October 2026, and getting it running usually adds another $600–$4,500: a dedicated 240V circuit, a level base and permits, plus about $1,400 or more if you hire out assembly. Shipping: Select Saunas ships most saunas free to the contiguous US, curbside by LTL freight with a delivery appointment. Door-to-door or a "difficult delivery" costs extra, and refusing a delivery for any reason other than damage triggers a 20% restocking fee there. Read the freight terms of whoever you buy from.

2. The 240V circuit: about $500 to $3,800
Every electric barrel needs a dedicated 240V circuit. A 6 kW Harvia KIP (the standard heater in the Pinnacle and Redwood's 6-person) needs 30 A; 8 kW needs 40 A; Backyard Discovery's 9 kW heater needs 50 A. What you pay depends far more on the route than the sauna:
| Situation | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Basic 220/240V circuit | $500–$800 | Fixr, as cited by Heat & Plunge |
| Short run near the panel | $500–$1,500 | RestoreSuite (third-party) |
| Owner-reported quotes, typical backyard | ~$800–$2,700 | r/Sauna threads |
| Long run with trenching | $1,500–$3,800 | RestoreSuite (third-party) |
Add more if your panel is full and needs a subpanel or upgrade. Our electrician guide covers wire sizes, GFCI rules and what to ask.
3. The base: $26 to $2,500
Almost Heaven's guidance is "firm and flat": concrete 3–4 in thick, 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone, a strong deck, or level pavers or blocks.
| Base (8×8 ft unless noted) | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel, materials only | $26–$128 | Bob Vila per-sq-ft range × 64 sq ft |
| Gravel pad, installed | $300–$900 | third-party installer estimates |
| Plain concrete, by area | $256–$448 | Bob Vila $4–$7/sq ft × 64 |
| Concrete pad, installed (incl. small-job minimums, prep) | $800–$2,500 | third-party installer estimates |
| Pavers | $512–$1,600 | Bob Vila $8–$25/sq ft × 64 |
An 8×8 ft pad leaves about a foot of margin around a 72×72 in barrel. More in our foundation guide.
4. Permits: often $50 to $350
Rules are local. One sauna seller (Haven of Heat) says detached structures under 120 sq ft commonly need no building permit, and puts electrical permits at $50–$200 and building permits at $100–$500 or more. A 6×6 ft barrel covers about 36 sq ft. Your electrician usually pulls the electrical permit. Check HOA rules and setbacks before you order.
5. Assembly: $0 or about $1,400+
DIY is realistic: Select Saunas says two people can generally assemble a Pinnacle in six hours or less. Sam's Club reviewers of the Backyard Discovery Paxton report 8–10 hours. If you'd rather not, Almost Heaven advertises nationwide installation starting at $1,400, and local handymen can quote.
6. Running cost: about $1–$2 a session
At the US average of 18.31¢/kWh (EIA, as cited by SaunaCosts and Heat & Plunge), a 6 kW heater at full power costs about $1.10 an hour. A session with a 45-minute preheat and a 30-minute sit tops out around $1.37; an 8 kW heater, around $1.83. Cold weather lengthens preheat.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a barrel sauna?
Kits we priced in October 2026 ran from $2,999 (Backyard Discovery Paxton 2–4 at Sam's Club, third-party check) to $8,499 (Redwood Outdoors Extra-Wide with porch). The popular Almost Heaven Pinnacle 4-person was $5,303–$6,060 depending on the seller.
How much does it cost to wire a barrel sauna?
Fixr puts a basic 220/240V circuit at $500–$800. Owners on r/Sauna report quotes from about $800 to $2,700, and a long trenched run to the back of a yard can reach roughly $1,500–$3,800. Distance from the panel and panel capacity are the big variables, so get more than one quote.
How much does a barrel sauna cost to run?
A 6 kW heater uses at most 6 kWh per hour at full power. At the US average of about 18.3¢/kWh, a session with a 45-minute preheat and a 30-minute sit costs at most about $1.37, and usually less because the thermostat cycles the heater.
Is it cheaper to buy a barrel sauna at Costco?
Often, for the kit. In a third-party October 2026 check, Costco's Almost Heaven Arcadia 2-person was $3,499.99, below Almost Heaven's own comparable 2-person model. You give up some options, and wiring, pad and assembly cost the same wherever you buy.
Can I install a barrel sauna myself?
Assembly, yes, if you're handy: Select Saunas says two people can generally assemble a Pinnacle in six hours or less with a cordless drill. The 240V circuit is a job for a licensed electrician in most places and often needs a permit.
