Sauna Electrician Guide: 240V Wiring, Amps, Cost & What to Ask
Short answer: an electric barrel sauna needs a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 30 A for a 6 kW heater, 40 A for 8 kW and 50 A for 9 kW, hardwired by a licensed electrician. Expect roughly $500–$800 for a simple circuit and $1,500–$3,800 for a long trenched run. Distance from the panel and spare panel capacity matter more than which sauna you buy.
Breaker size by heater
| Heater | Current at 240V | Typical breaker | Found in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 kW (Harvia KIP60B) | 25 A | 30 A, 2-pole | Almost Heaven Pinnacle, Redwood 6-person, Costco Arcadia, Dundalk Harmony |
| 8 kW (e.g. Harvia KIP 8 kW) | ~33 A | 40 A, 2-pole | Redwood 8-person, Costco 6-person models; upgrade on many others |
| 9 kW (PrairieFire, Homecraft) | 37.5 A | 50 A, 2-pole | Backyard Discovery Paxton; Redwood upgrade option |
Current = watts ÷ volts. Breaker sizes are the ones the sellers and Heat & Plunge list for these heaters. The heater's own manual and nameplate always win. Some electricians apply the continuous-load 125% rule and size up; that's a code judgment for your electrician and inspector.
Lighting is usually separate. Select Saunas lists the Pinnacle's light as 110V, 15 A plug-in; Redwood lists 120V for lighting. Many electricians run a second small circuit or tap an existing outdoor circuit for it.
Wire gauge, distance and GFCI: the three details to get right
Wire gauge
Per Heat & Plunge's reading of Harvia's North American KIP manual, KIP heaters call for 10/2 copper at 30 A and 8/2 at 40 A, and the manual asks for 8/2 instead of 10/2 on runs over 90 ft. Underground runs also need wire rated for wet locations, in conduit or direct-burial cable at the depth your code requires; that's where trenching cost comes from.
Distance
Every foot from the panel adds wire, conduit and trench. If you have flexibility, put the sauna near the house wall closest to the panel. It's the single cheapest way to lower the quote.
GFCI
Heat & Plunge reports that Harvia's KIP manual says not to put KIP heaters on a GFCI breaker; heating elements can leak enough current to cause nuisance trips. Some local codes now require GFCI protection on more outdoor circuits. If your electrician and the manual disagree, ask your inspector before the trench is closed.
Panel capacity: the hidden cost
A 30 A sauna circuit takes two breaker slots and a meaningful share of your service. If the panel is full, the options are tandem breakers (where the panel allows), a subpanel, or a service upgrade, each adding cost. Before you request quotes, photograph the open panel door showing the main breaker rating (e.g. 100 A or 200 A) and the free slots. Electricians can often estimate from photos.
What it costs
| Job | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Basic 220/240V circuit | $500–$800 | Fixr (via Heat & Plunge) |
| Short run near panel | $500–$1,500 | RestoreSuite (third-party) |
| Owner-reported backyard quotes | ~$800–$2,700 | r/Sauna threads, 2024–2026 |
| Long run with trench | $1,500–$3,800 | RestoreSuite (third-party) |
| Electrical permit | $50–$200 | Haven of Heat (via Heat & Plunge) |
Owners on r/Sauna regularly report quotes for apparently identical jobs that differ by more than $1,000. Three quotes on the same written scope is the simplest protection.
Questions to ask a sauna electrician
- Have you wired a sauna heater before? Have you read this heater's install manual?
- What breaker size and wire gauge will you use, and why?
- Will the run be in conduit or direct burial, and how deep?
- Does my panel have capacity, or do I need a subpanel?
- Is a disconnect required at the sauna in our jurisdiction?
- Will you pull the permit and schedule the inspection? Is that in the price?
- Is GFCI protection required here, and how will you square that with the heater manual?
- Does the price include the lighting circuit and connecting the heater inside the barrel?
- Who restores the lawn or patio after trenching?
Order of operations
Pad first, then delivery and assembly, then the final heater connection. The electrician can trench and run conduit to the pad early, then return to mount and wire the heater once the barrel is built. Tell them which heater you have: KIP models with dials, Wi-Fi models and Spirit heaters can have different control wiring.
Frequently asked questions
Does a barrel sauna need 240V?
An electric one does. Barrel sauna heaters in the 6–9 kW range are 240V, hardwired appliances on a dedicated circuit. Lighting is usually a separate 120V circuit; the Pinnacle's light is a 110V/15 A plug-in.
How many amps does a sauna heater need?
Follow the heater's nameplate and manual. Typical: 6 kW on a 30 A breaker, 8 kW on 40 A, and the 9 kW PrairieFire heater in Backyard Discovery barrels on 50 A. At 240V, 6 kW draws 25 A, 8 kW about 33 A and 9 kW 37.5 A.
Can a sauna heater go on a GFCI breaker?
Harvia's KIP manual says not to use a GFCI breaker with KIP heaters, according to Heat & Plunge's reading of the manual. Heating elements can leak small currents that trip GFCIs. Local code has the final word, so make sure your electrician has read the specific manual.
What size wire for a sauna heater?
For Harvia KIP heaters, the North American manual specifies 10/2 copper at 30 A and 8/2 at 40 A, and asks for 8/2 instead of 10/2 on runs over 90 ft (per Heat & Plunge). Wire type for buried runs, conduit and voltage drop are your electrician's call.
How much does a sauna electrician cost?
Fixr puts a basic 220V circuit at $500–$800. Owner-reported quotes on r/Sauna run about $800–$2,700, and long trenched runs about $1,500–$3,800 per third-party estimates. Panel upgrades or subpanels are extra.
