Sauna Installers and Builders in Minneapolis–St. Paul
By the Barrel Sauna Guide editorial team · Updated · Sources cited on this page. Editorial policy
This directory lists 8 businesses in the Twin Cities metro that install, build on site, or build and deliver outdoor saunas, from Almost Heaven barrel dealers to custom cabin builders. It also includes 2 businesses based elsewhere in Minnesota that say they serve the metro. Each card links to the page we checked in October 2026.
If you've already picked a barrel kit, start with the dealers and installers that mention barrel saunas. If you want a sauna designed and built for your yard, call the custom builders first. Before you reach out, look over the checklist after the listings. It covers what to send and what to ask, so your first quote comes back close to the real price.

Most installers can't price a job until they know what you're putting in, where it's going, and how far the power has to run. Send these three things with your first message and you'll get a useful quote sooner.
Give them the model: Send the brand and exact model name, or the size you're considering if you haven't bought yet. Assembling a barrel kit and building a custom cabin are very different jobs, so this tells a business right away whether it's the right fit.
Send photos of the site: Take a few shots of the spot from different angles, showing the ground, any slope, and the path a delivery would take. That lets them spot pad work or access problems before anyone drives out.
Measure the distance to your electrical panel: Measure how many feet the sauna will sit from the panel. A longer run means more wire and often a trench, so this one number has a big effect on the wiring part of the bill.
Questions to Ask Before You Hire
The cards show only what each business's website says it does, and a quote covers only what's written into it. Ask each business these questions and get the answers in writing.
Ask who handles the electrical: Most cards here don't mention electrical work. Minnesota requires an electrical permit and inspection for the wiring either way, so find out who pulls the permit and whether a licensed electrician does the work.
Ask what delivery includes: At least one builder on this page charges extra to deliver and position a finished sauna. Check whether the price covers getting it onto your pad.
Ask who builds the pad: Find out whether they prepare the base or expect it to be finished before delivery day. If it's on you, our barrel sauna foundation guide walks through the options.
Ask about permits: Permit rules vary from city to city across the metro. Ask whether the quote includes pulling permits and who will check with your building department.
Our advice is to get written quotes from at least two or three businesses that do the kind of work you need. Comparing them side by side is the easiest way to see what one of them left out.
This is a planning checklist, not electrical or building advice. A licensed electrician and your city or county building department decide how the circuit is wired and what needs a permit.
Sauna Permits and Electrical Rules in the Twin Cities
Building permit: Minnesota's building code exempts one-story detached accessory structures "used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses, and similar uses" up to 200 sq ft from a building permit (Minn. R. 1300.0120, subp. 4). The rule doesn't name saunas, so ask your city whether it treats a heated sauna as a similar use. [revisor.mn.gov]
Zoning still applies: an exempt structure still has to meet the code, local zoning and setbacks, and can't sit in a drainage or utility easement. [dli.mn.gov]
Electrical permit: wiring in a shed needs an electrical permit and inspection even when no building permit is required, and the rule itself says electrical permits are still required for exempt structures. [dli.mn.gov] [revisor.mn.gov]
Doing the wiring yourself: homeowners may pull their own electrical permit only for a single-family home they own and occupy, and must do all the work themselves. [dli.mn.gov]
Minneapolis: the city lists one-story tool and storage sheds under 200 sq ft as work that may not need a permit, and asks you to confirm with it first. [minneapolismn.gov]
Your city or county building department has the final word. Our permit guide lists the questions to ask, and the wiring guide covers the 240V circuit.
Plan the Rest of the Project
Estimate your total with our barrel sauna cost calculator, which adds up the kit, wiring, pad, and permit in one place. Having that number before quotes arrive makes it easier to tell whether a bid is in the right range.
Who's included: businesses with a Minnesota location or a stated Minnesota service area whose own website says they install, build on site, or build and deliver outdoor saunas. Retailers that sell saunas without saying they install them aren't listed.
Where the facts come from: every detail on a card comes from the business's own website (or a brand's dealer locator for the brands it carries), and each card links to the page we checked. A service badge appears only if the business's site states it. A missing badge just means the site doesn't mention that service, so ask.
What we leave out: star ratings, reviews, rankings, and "best" labels. Listings are alphabetical within each region, and no business pays to be listed.
Keeping it current: we re-check listings against each business's site and remove ones that close or stop offering the service. Our editorial policy explains how we research and check every listing.
